Crystal Palace Park

Engagement underway at Crystal Palace Park

The Environment Council has been working in partnership with Nigel Westaway Associates on this project in South London.  Crystal Palace Park is located in South London and is of course famous for the Palace designed by Sir Joseph Paxton, which re-located there in 1854 after the Great Exhibition in 1851.  It was unfortunately destroyed by fire in 1936 and today the Park itself is showing signs of deterioration.

There has been great dispute surrounding one particular area of the park as proposals were put forward some years ago to build a multiplex cinema complex.  However, the local community fought against this and the plans were dropped in 2001.  Since then however, stakeholders have not been able to agree a way forward for the park.  As a way of resolving this, a dialogue process was set up in early 2003 to bring together a range of stakeholders to develop a package of solutions for the park and sports centre.  The London Development Agency (LDA) became involved in early 2004.

Through the dialogue process the LDA has been able to produce a planning framework for the park, which was opened to consultation at the end of 2005.  Masterplanners who will draw up a plan for the overall future of the park have recently been recruited with the help of members of the dialogue process.
