Environment Agency British Energy and Flood Management Drop-in Centres

In early 2006 we trained and supported Environment Agency (EA) staff to run a public drop-in centre on the issue of their regulatory role in licensing British Energy’s nuclear power plants.

We worked with the EA to develop the necessary key messages, FAQs, communications materials and external briefing materials.  These were used in the actual drop-ins and also for the bespoke training. We designed a highly interactive, fun day for a cross-section of EA staff, including regulators, technical experts, environmental managers and communications specialists from six EA regions.  The day also gave depth and practice in communications, listening, questioning; managing difficult behaviour; rehearsing key messages and provided staff with a learning log.  Feedback on the day was outstanding.  An evaluation conducted six months later showed that retention rates were exceptionally high and all staff reported that they had applied the skills in other aspects of their work.

Further to the success of this training, in September 2007 we provided a training day for EA staff in the Anglian region.  This was to support them to run a drop-in centre on the Blyth Estuary Flood Management Plan.  Again this was a highly interactive and successful day that gave support and confidence to staff to represent the EA and its issues to the public.
