Magnox Decommissioning Dialogue
This national stakeholder dialogue, which ran from 2000-2005, addressed the issues related to decommissioning of the UK's Magnox nuclear power stations. It was convened by The Environment Council and involved a wide range of stakeholders from national and local government, the nuclear industry, local environmental groups, regulators, advisory bodies, trade unions, learned societies and academia.
The dialogue considered the options for decommissioning the Magnox power stations, including alternatives to proposals that existed to defer the dismantling of some parts of these sites, particularly the reactor structures, for about 100 years after their shutdown. A key element of the dialogue was the consideration of options involving earlier completion of dismantling.
The dialogue was published in a Progress Report in March 2005, the key component being a report by the Strategic Action Planning Working Group (SAPWG), which addressed the decommissioning options and issues. This report identified that further consideration should be given to the options for completing the decommissioning of the Magnox power stations earlier than presently planned. It proposed various actions for progressing the consideration of the feasible decommissioning options, a process that will proceed and inform decisions on the most appropriate strategy. It recommended that the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA) should take the lead responsibility for progressing these actions and taking forward continuing stakeholder engagement on Magnox nuclear power station decommissioning, including the consideration of site specific issues.
