Tidal Power in the UK
Between January and April 2007 The Environment Council was contracted by the Sustainable Development Commission (SDC) to undertake nationwide consultation on the issues surrounding Tidal Power in the UK. The project is a result of the UK Government’s 2006 Energy Review, which contained a commitment to work with the SDC and others to explore the potential of tidal power in the UK.

While the Severn Estuary was a focus within the engagement programme, exploring the opinions and attitudes of stakeholders towards tidal power in the UK covered a variety of sustainability aspects. These included geographical considerations and the various technological solutions to harnessing the potential of tidal power in light of the fact that the UK has some of the best potential tidal power resources in the world.
The stakeholder engagement part of the project is now complete with material available below. The SDC provides a complete background to the project along with all related documents at their website.
